Faroese language to feature on Google Translate
DKK 500,000 has been earmarked in the 2021 budget proposal for a project which seeks to translate 200,000 English phrases and sentences into Faroese.
The objective of the project is to make the Faroese language part of Google Translate, which is crucial for the future development of the Faroese language in the digital landscape, according to the Ministry of Culture.
“We have a wonderfully rich language with words for every conceivable concept, but it is difficult for an old and small language like ours not to be in some way diluted in this new online world,” says Jonhard Mikkelsen, CEO of book publisher Sprotin, which oversees the project.
“Including Faroese in Google Translate would help mitigate this impact by making our language an active part of this massive international communication network.”
