The Tórshavn Marathon, scheduled for 26 September, has been called off.

“We have not managed to attain a sufficient number of participants to make this year’s marathon live up to the high expectations that runners have of the event,” says a spokesperson for running club Bragdið, which organises the event.

The marathon, popular with runners from across the world, was originally scheduled for 6 June this year, but it was rescheduled for 26 September after a sudden spike in Covid cases this spring.

Lack of participants

However, it now appears that Covid uncertainties continue to be an obstacle.

“Now, one month ahead of our rescheduled date, we see how difficult it can be to reschedule such an event, and we have to face the fact that the key element of the Tórshavn Marathon – the runners – is missing.”

Bragdið adds that next year’s Tórshavn Marathon will go ahead as planned.
