Unusually early RS virus outbreak

Mother & child groups at Tórshavn’s National Hospital have been temporarily called off in an effort to prevent the spread of RS virus.

This comes after many babies infected with this virus have been admitted to National Hospital’s children’s ward in recent weeks.

The RS (Respiratory syncytial) virus is a very common virus which causes infections of the respiratory tract. Read more about the RS virus in this Wikipedia article.

“The RS virus season usually starts around November and December, so this is a rather unusual time for this outbreak,” says Elmar Ósá, chief physician at the children’s ward at Tórshavn’s National Hospital.

He adds that relatively few children have been hospitalised with infectious diseases during the Covid pandemic and that the current surge may be connected with the eased Covid restrictions.
