Ceremonial first blast for Norðoyggjar tunnels

Finance minister Jørgen Niclasen, who also oversees transport matters, today detonated the first blast to begin construction of the ‘Norður um Fjall’ tunnel project.

The project consists of replacing two tunnels, one from Klaksvík to Árnafjørður and another from Árnafjørður to Norðtoftir, both dating back to the 1960s.

The Klaksvík-Árnafjørður tunnel will be about 1,900 metres long, and the Árnafjørður-Norðtoftir tunnel will be about 2,200 metres long.

The total project cost is estimated at DKK 522 million, and the project is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2024.
