Hospitals “not overburdened” by Covid patients

Eight people are currently receiving hospital care for Covid-19.

A few days ago, this figure had reached 11; however, it turns out that not all of these required treatment for Covid.

Some of them were ‘regular’ hospital patients who turned out to be infected with Covid and thus ended up being counted in the ‘hospitalised Covid patients’ statistics.

“The situation is under control even though we have more Covid patients that we had expected,” says Tummas í Garði, chief operational officer of the Hospital Service.

“Our three hospitals can handle more Covid patients than the current eight without buckling under.”

The Covid-19 ward at Tórshavn’s National Hospital was built to accommodate eight patients.

“This number was deemed during the early stages of the pandemic what we could handle without having to sacrifice other hospital functions,” he says.

“With a bit of restructuring, we can provide intensive care to more than eight Covid patients in our hospitals.”

Yesterday’s 3.650 Covid tests resulted in 85 positive results, reports corona.fo.

These people have all been notified by the health authorities, and extensive contact tracing is underway.

The daily numbers of positive tests over the past week have been as follows: 84, 81, 71, 63, 67, 76 and 85.

There are currently 757 active Covid cases in the country.

From tonight until Friday night between 6.30pm and midnight, people travelling in passenger cars through the Eysturoy tunnel for Covid testing in Tórshavn will get their tunnel charge reimbursed.

Register your name, phone number and your car’s licence plate number at the testing site, and the tunnel charge will be reimbursed after a few days.

According to the latest vaccination figures on corona.fo, updated today, 40,002 people (74.8 percent of the population) have received the first shot of the vaccine, 38,006 (71.0 percent) have received the second shot.
