The Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously supports the government’s plans to join other western nations in imposing sanctions against Russia in response to the attacks on Ukraine.

“I was very pleased to see the full and united support from the entire committee, across government and opposition,” says Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen.

The measures will primarily be aimed at the Russian finance, energy and logistics sectors. There are also plans to introduce Faroese visa restrictions on selected Russian citizens.

A bill is currently being drawn up, and it will be passed on to Parliament in the coming days.

The Prime Minister has been in talks with the country’s major exporters, who say there are alternative markets to target in case trade relations with Russia deteriorate as a result of the new sanctions.

“This move may prove costly for the Faroe Islands. We all know that defending democracy can be costly, but this is the path we have chosen, and we stand by our duty to protect democracy.”

Nielsen expects to see the sanctions package approved in Parliament over the next few days.
