New master’s programme in IT engineering

Demand for qualified IT professionals in the Faroese labour market is on a steady rise.
IT engineering is currently only available as a three-year bachelor’s degree at the University of the Faroe Islands (Fróðskaparsetrið).
But this is about to change as the university is planning to launch a master’s degree in IT engineering next summer.
“There has long been a demand from students and the IT industry for an advanced study programme in IT engineering,” says professor Hannes Gislason, the head of education at Fróðskaparsetrið’s IT engineering department.
Demand from all sides
“Students are keen to learn about new areas within IT such as artificial intelligence, and many IT professionals leave their jobs to go abroad for further study.”
The new master’s programme builds on the basics of software development taught in the bachelor’s programme and allows for specialisation in data sciences, with a special focus on either AI, “the internet of things” or IT security.
The master’s programme will include an optional module, and students will have six months to write their master’s thesis.
