Telecoms firms join forces for 5G
Instead of setting up two separate 5G networks, Føroya Tele and Nema will be working together to set up a shared network

FT Samskifti, a subsidiary of Føroya Tele, and Nema have signed a collaboration deal to develop the upcoming 5G network.

The collaboration will benefit the customers, but both providers will continue to compete on products and services, the two companies state in a press release.

FT Samskifti last year signed a deal with Swedish telecoms firm Ericsson to develop the Faroese 5G network which, according to the latest estimates, is expected to be up and running by the first quarter of 2023.

The collaboration deal is subject to approval by Kappingareftirlitið, the Faroese Competition Authority.

Nema suggested a shared 5G network as far back as in 2019 when the company’s name was Hey, saying at the time:

“A shared network would have a positive effect on the national economy as running costs would be significantly lower, and ultimately the end user will end up paying less for the service.”
