Hey calls for shared 5G network
Telecom provider Hey has sent an initial authorisation application to the Faroese Telecommunications Authority regarding the setting up of a 5G network.
The company’s pilot plan consists of trialling 5G in selected locations, including Tórshavn, Klaksvík, Runavík and Tvøroyri, and then later to expand the network to cover all the islands.
Huawei provides the 5G equipment.
A shared network benefits all
In its application, Hey proposes that all telecom providers, large and small, in the country share the same 5G network, rather than having two or more separate ones.
“A shared network would have a positive effect on the national economy, as running costs would be significantly lower, and ultimately the end user will end up paying less for the service,” Hey writes in its application.
“We believe this is an important point to consider in the current process of assigning 5G frequencies to telecom providers.”
