Surge in doctor threats raises safety concerns, compromising workplace security
The escalating threats against doctors could, in severe cases, put their lives in jeopardy, says association of medical professionals

Medical professionals are reporting a rise in harassing behaviour, prompting concerns about their safety and work environment.

Recent reports detail instances of direct threats and aggressive behaviour towards doctors, occurring in emergency rooms, outpatient wards and GP surgeries.

There are also many examples of direct and indirect threats on social media.

Work safety compromised

The association of medical professionals (Læknafelagið) is raising alarm on the surge in aggression against doctors, highlighting an increasingly unsafe work environment.

According to the association, many doctors are considering a career change. Some have reduced their work hours and others report feeling generally unsafe at work.

This has prompted the association to call for a stronger framework around work safety for medical professionals.

“Safety procedures for health professionals are unclear, escape routes are inadequate and there is a lack of safety instructions for health staff that are subjected to threatening behaviour or harassment,” the association writes in a public announcement.
