Sports play a huge role in Faroese society.

Not only are there thousands of active athletes; there is also a great deal of sports science taking place in the background.

Shedding light on all this activity, a conference, titled ‘Børnini, breiddin og tey bestu - hvat kunnu vit í Føroyum’ (‘The children, the breadth and the elite – the scope and potential of Faroese sports’) will take place in Tórshavn next Friday.

Organised by the national sports federation (ÍSF) and the University of the Faroe Islands (Setrið), the conference will be divided into three main themes.

The first theme will focus on children’s sports and sports in schools.

The second theme is about sports as medicine, exploring how sports participation can be integrated into preventive healthcare programmes.

The third theme is about elite sports, touching on the question of what unique factors contribute to the success of Faroese athletes on the global stage.

Faroese sports scientists will present their latest findings along with Danish researchers and representatives from ÍSF and Setrið.

Magni Mohr, professor of sports science at Setrið, says that the Faroes have fostered a robust research ecosystem fuelling progress in sports and health.

“In addition to dedicated sports scientists, we also have a dedicated network of coaches, trainers, physios and community leaders who are passionate about supporting athletes and encouraging physical activity,” he says.

“We want to gather all these people in one place to connect minds and ideas, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and on-the-ground application to unlock the full potential of Faroese athletes.”

More information is available on the Setrið website (in Faroese only).

Attendance is free, but registration is required.
