Thousands want to maintain the Faroe Islands

On the back of last year’s successful first event, more than 4,000 people have already signed up to receive notifications for ‘Closed for Maintenance’ 2020.

Official registration opens today at 3pm (GMT) on the Visit Faroe Islands website.

The first 100 people from abroad to register and pay for flights will be admitted to the Maintenance Crew for 2020.

The plan is also to include more Faroese citizens this year, and 40 passes will be allocated to local maintenance workers.

Earlier this year, Visit Faroe Islands called on local authorities and tourist information centres to submit proposals for projects which they wished to include in this year’s campaign.

Many proposals came in, and 14 areas will be included in this year’s maintenance campaign, compared to 10 last year.

Improving safety for hikers

The maintenance work will mainly consist of building footpaths and erecting signposts with the aim of making it safer and easier for local and foreign hikers to explore the Faroese countryside.

Some of the projects will be continuations of the work that was done during last year’s event.

‘Closed for Maintenance, Open for voluntourism’ is organised by Visit Faroe Islands in collaboration with local authorities and tourist information centres across the islands.
