Changes to firearms law
Amendments to the firearms law aim to clarify the procedures regarding exports of firearms, and who is authorised to issue firearms transportation permits.
One reason for the law change is that overseas transportation of firearms, for instance for professional sports shooters who travel abroad, has proved significantly easier when the export of the firearm has been officially documented in the country of departure.
Firearms pass
The Environment Agency issues export permits for firearms, and the requirement for an export permit is a so-called firearms pass. The law change aims to clarify and simplify this process.
A directive will also be introduced to grant the police direct access to the Environment Agency’s weapons register.
The firearms law dates back to 1969, with amendments from 1980 and 2015.
