Hand hygiene is a crucial element in the prevention of infection, not least when it comes to viral infections.

Only seconds after the news broke yesterday about a Faroese man having contracted the coronavirus, detergent manufacturer Kemilux was inundated with requests for hand sanitising gel.

”There has been immense pressure since the news broke,” says Andrias F. Hansen, sales manager at Kemilux.

“The demand for sanitising gel has been so high that we are struggling to keep up production.” Most enquiries have come from private persons, but Hansen says they have also received calls from pharmacies, the National Hospital and elderly care homes.

“We are working day and night to meet the demand.”

According to a new German study, the coronavirus can surivive on surfaces for up to five days.
