DKK 300,000 has been earmarked in next year’s state budget proposal for preliminary work to set up a centre for women suffering domestic abuse.

A recent study on violence and sexual assault confirmed the hypothesis that domestic violence is no less prevalent in the Faroes than elsewhere.

At the presentation of the study this spring, Elin Winther Poulsen, a co-ordinator at the Ministry of Social Affairs, said:

“Faroese people tend to downplay these problems due to a lack of real figures. Now we have some real figures, and they confirm our hypothesis. So now we have no excuses for not doing anything about it.”

The aim is to get the reception house for abused women up and running by the end of 2022.
