The Covid situation in the Faroes has reached critical proportions, Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen said at today’s news conference.

About 115 new Covid cases were registered yesterday. This is an estimate as the final figures are not in yet. A majority of the new cases were registered in the Norðoyggjar region, but most parts of the country are affected.

“I sincerely urge everyone to follow the recommendations we issued yesterday,” said the Prime Minister.

“Too many people appear to have forgotten about social distancing and good hygiene. It is crucial that we return to the good habits we developed at the start of the pandemic.”

According to the latest figures, vaccinated people are about five times less likely to be infected than unvaccinated people, said chief medical officer Lars Fodgaard Møller.

Border testing

From 15 November, any arrivals from abroad who do not possess a vaccine passport will be required to get tested at the borders.

This measure may be introduced earlier, but it takes a while to set up this revised border testing system, said police chief/head of the epidemic commission Michael Boolsen.

He added that health staff have been receiving serious threats in recent weeks.

“This is a very serious matter, and I have now arranged with the Hospital Service that anyone who threatens healthcare workers will from now on be prosecuted.”
