The influence of the English language on the younger generation is becoming clearer by the day, says Ivan H. Niclasen, CEO of Kringvarp Føroya, ahead of proposed law changes for the national broadcasting corporation.

“KvF’s primary duty is to preserve our language and our culture amid an ever-increasing influence from online streaming services,” he says.

“We do what we can to produce quality content for children and youths, but the rising costs are making it difficult to keep up with this challenge.”

KvF has submitted a set of suggestions to the Minister of Culture ahead of today’s consultation deadline for the proposed changes to KvF’s public service agreement.

“We are happy to hear about plans to adjust the licence fee for inflation because our costs continue to rise while our income basis has remained unchanged for the past six years,” he says.

“It is of course good that our youth has a varied supply of media content, but for us to stand a chance of competing for their attention, it is crucial that we find a way of future-proofing the financial basis of the Faroese media landscape.”
