Microsoft Translator app supports Faroese language
You can now type in a Faroese sentence on your phone or PC and have it instantly translated into languages such as English, French, Spanish and German – and vice versa.
Two years ago, work began on translating 200,000 Faroese phrases and sentences into other languages, which was the minimum requirement for online translation tools.
The plan was initially to include the Faroese language in Google Translate, but now it has emerged that Microsoft has started incorporating these translations into its Microsoft Translator app.
Early stages of development
The app also offers voice translations. These are, however, only available from foreign languages to Faroese.
“It will take a while before voice translations from Faroese to other languages will be available,” says project coordinator Jonhard Mikkelsen, CEO of publishing firm Sprotin.
“We are at the very early stages of this project, and the system is far from flawless at this point.”
The Microsoft Translator app is available for Android and iPhone. The desktop version is available here.
