Jónas and Lív the most popular baby names in 2021

Jónas and Lív were the most popular names for boys and girls born in 2021, reports Statistics Faroe Islands.

Of the ten most popular baby names in 2021, Jónas and Lív are the only ones that featured in the top-10 on the very first Faroese baby names list from 2001.

Lív was ninth on the 2001 list and Jónas was fifth. This is the first time that Lív is the most popular baby girl name, while Jónas has topped the list no less than ten times.

Other popular baby boy names in 2021 were Nóa, Gilli, Jógvan, Markus, Adrian and Bragi. Popular girl names included Julia, Emma, Isabella, Nora, Ria and Sólja.

Lív was the only girl’s name to feature in the top 10 in 2021 and in 2001. The most popular baby girl names in 2001 were Ronja, Vár, Helena and Rebekka.

Jónas was also the only boy’s name in the top 10 in both the 2021 and the 2001 lists. The most popular baby boy names in 2001 were Jákup, Hanus, Rói and Dánjal.

Many new names have been added to the list since 2001, the most popular of which are Nóa, Bragi and Liam for the boys and Brá, Vón and Ria for the girls.
