Food for thought: college celebrates cultural diversity

As part of the Multicultural Week, Tórshavn’s Glasir college is celebrating its cultural diversity with a special multicultural food days event.
“It is important that our students get to expand their horizons and experience all the different cultures we have here at our college. At the end of the week, we will all know a lot more about each other,” says Glasir’s head of education, Unn V. Zachariassen.

“I moved to the Faroes from India 30 years ago. This is now my home,” says Sharon Christiansen, who teaches English at Glasir.
“I always tell my students that the best way to experience a new culture is through food and language. It is amazing that such a tiny country can accommodate 134 nationalities, and it’s great to see that Faroese people have become more open to different cultures.”

Winda Tesovo Petersen and Khirvie J. Reinert work as cleaners at Glasir. They are both from the Philippines. Winda moved to the Faroes 20 years ago and Khirvie five years ago.
They say the multicultural food days are a good way to introduce the Philippines to Faroese students and a good way for the students to learn to respect their culture.
The Glasir library is also celebrating cultural diversity this week with lunchtime readings in various languages.
