Doctors go on strike

Doctors go on strike
A countrywide GP strike is due to start tomorrow morning after contract talks broke down

The General Practitioners’ Association has announced that general practitioners will go on strike tomorrow at 8am.

The Ministry of Finance and the GPs’ Association have been locked in a contract dispute since February, and their contract expires today.

“Our GPs are overburdened, and they’ve had enough,” said Marjus Dam, chairman of the GPs’ Association. “Our working conditions are unacceptable. We demand serious negotiations.”

On 18 April, Mr Dam advised the public to prepare for a possible strike and stock up on their prescription medication in case the dispute resulted in a doctors’ strike.

No public emergency action plan

The Public Health Insurance (Heilsutrygd) currently has no emergency action plan, and no agreement on doctors exempt from the strike has yet been approved.

“We are waiting to hear about exemptions from the General Practitioners’ Association, so that we can implement our emergency plan,” said Egil á Bø, the head of Heilsutrygd, which is responsible for GPs.

For emergencies, call Læknavaktin on 1870.
