Shortage of fish factory workers

Shortage of fish factory workers
Fish factories across the islands are looking for workers ahead of the mackerel season

20.08.2018 - 13:57

The mackerel season is about to begin, and this means there will be more work at the country’s pelagic fish factores in the coming weeks.

Pelagos in Fuglafjørður will be needing 25 more workers once the factory starts receiving mackerel. Jóhan Páll Joensen, CEO at Pelagos, says that it has so far not been difficult to find staff for the factory, and he does not expect to see any problems with finding workers this year either.

Pelagos usually hires students and other people who are affiliated with the factory but who work elsewhere when factory production is low.

Marine Harvest is also planning to increase its workforce for the new gutting factory, which is set to open in Strendur in a month’s time. Some 25-30 people will be needed to work in the new factory.

Marine Harvest’s CEO, Hans Jákup Mikkelsen, says he will not know whether it will be difficult to find until the application process starts.
