The time has come for local and national authorities to find ways to reduce noise pollution from industry and traffic, says Pál Weihe, doctor of occupational medicine.

“Numerous studies have shown that noise can have a negative effect on your sleep, and that can lead to other health complications such as high blood pressure. So we need to start taking noise seriously,” he says.

A recent study carried out by the Environment Agency at Kollafjørður harbour revealed that traffic noise in the area can be as high as 69 decibels.

“This is significantly higher than the limits set out by the World Health Organization,” says Weihe.
