Plan to take over part of immigration jurisdiction

Faroese authorities may soon get to decide which foreigners are given residence permits.

The Ministry of Trade and Foreign Affairs has submitted a bill which seeks to transfer most of the residence permit administration from Danish authorities to the Faroes.

According to the head of the Immigration Office, this is a big step in the right direction.

Foreign minister Poul Michelsen says that the Schengen agreement makes it difficult to transfer the entire immigration jurisdiction at this time, but he adds that the ministry continues to work towards that goal.
