Despite the Arctic climate, Faroese skiers have not had the ideal conditions for indulging in their hobby.

This is about to change now, as the country’s first real ski lift is being installed at Sornfelli mountain, Streymoy.

“It wouldn’t be wrong to say that this is a revolution for Faroese skiing,” says Kári Árting, chairman of ski club Fjalir.

With financial support from Tórshavn City Council, Fjalir has purchased the 200-metre long lift and is currently installing it on top of the popular Sornfelli ski slope.

“Now we can have lots of rides in a day, whereas before we could only do one per day, because walking back up the mountain is simply too tiring. So now we’re really going to have some fun,” says Árting.

He adds that the ski lift inspires Fjalir to further improve the Sornfelli ski slope.

“Maybe the next step will be to buy a preparation machine which can move the snow and flatten it on the slope.”

The Sornfelli ski lift costs DKK 250,000.
