Faroese lorry drivers should be covered by Danish rules on driving and resting time, but the Road Traffic Act needs to be amended first.

The Ministry of Transport has now submitted this amendment, which authorises the transport minister to lay down rules on driving and resting time and to determine whether driving and resting time rules laid down by the Danish transport minister should apply in whole or in part in the Faroes.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Faroes have changed from being a society in which sea travel was the only way to connect the islands to one which is tied together in a road network with subsea tunnels.

This means that most freight transport today is done with lorries rather than ships and boats.

And the people who drive these lorries will soon be covered by statutory rules on how long they can drive in one go and how long they should rest between drives.
