Locals finally settle on village name
The longstanding debate on whether the village of Skálafjørður should keep its name or change to Skálabotnur now appears to be resolved

A consultative referendum on the name of the village located at the bottom of the Skálafjørður fjord took place yesterday.

Locals were presented with the choice of sticking with the current name, Skálafjørður, and Skálabotnur.

As Skálafjørður is the name of the fjord, some have argued that Skálabotnur (meaning ‘bottom of Skála’) is a more suitable and perhaps less confusing name.

Clear winner

There was a large turn-out for the referendum, as was the majority for holding on to the current village name.

In the end, ‘Skálafjørður’ received 48 votes against 26 for ‘Skálabotnur’, much to the delight of the ‘Skálafjørður’ supporters.
