Faroes to mark Holocaust commemoration day

Faroes to mark Holocaust commemoration day
January 27 will now officially be a Faroese day of commemoration for those who died in the Holocaust

06.05.2019 - 15:26

Parliament has unanimously approved a proposal by MP Jógvan á Lakjuni to introduce an official commemoration day for victims of the Holocaust.

On 1 November 2005, the United Nations agreed to make 27 January an international day of commemoration of the Holocaust and other instances of genocide.

The UN called on all member states to adopt this practice to ensure that future generations can learn from history and prevent further genocides. Most member states, including the European Union, have since adopted the Holocaust commemoration day.

As part of the Faroes joining in, funds will now be allocated for education materials, exhibitions and various performance shows throughout the islands to shed light on the issue on 27 January every year from now.
