Teachers demand redundancy pay

Teachers demand redundancy pay
A dispute about when teachers in a private independent school were made redundant has been taken to court

21.03.2018 - 15:51

The Teachers’ Association has summoned the private school at Hoyvíkstjørn, also known as Adventistaskúlin, to court for redundancy payments totalling 1.4 million kr.

Representatives from the school insist that the teachers have received all their due redundancy pay.

Dispute about redundancy date

Adventistaskúlin closed on 1 August 2014. The Teachers’ Association and the school disagree about the date when the teachers were made redundant.

The Ministry of Culture has been ordered to provisionally accept the ground rule that the state is obliged by law to pay 85% of the redundancy payment to private school teachers.

The state should pay

The law states that the state should pay 85% of private school teachers’ salary, and according to the Court of the Faroe Islands the state is also responsible for redundancy payments.

It will, however, not be decided who will end up paying the redundancy bill until the dispute with the Teachers’ Association has been settled in court today.
