Plans for new city square in Tórshavn

The Construction and Town Planning Committee has been working on plans to expand the Steinatún area in Tórshavn City centre.
According to the committee’s proposal, the new city square will be partly roofed over and will include bus stops with information services for citizens and tourists.
As part of the project, the committee has also proposed that the iconic Náttaravnar fast-food kiosk is pulled down.
The Steinatún area has undergone significant changes since the City Council acquired the BankNordik building, which is now being used as an office building. The ground floor consists of the Visit Tórshavn offices, a pharmacy and chocolatier/café Gómagott.
As the ground-floor hall is a popular gathering point for bus travellers, the council believes there is a need to construct purpose-made bus stops in the area.
The solution is a modern city square, which doubles as a bus stop and an information hub.
Tomorrow night, the council will vote on whether the Náttaravnar kiosk should be pulled down to make way for the new project. Also on tomorrow’s agenda is the plan to cover parts of Steinatún with a roof.
