Urgent need for multisports hall
The Faroese Handball Federation cannot afford to continue organising its home games abroad

The Faroese national men’s handball suffered a crushing 17-35 defeat against Denmark on Saturday.

Although this was a home game for the Faroese team, the match was played in Skjern, Denmark, as none of the Faroese sports halls are deemed to meet international requirements.

According to Gunn Ellefsen, the chairwoman of the Faroese Handball Federation (HSF), the ‘home game away’ went according to plan, and more home games will be played abroad, although it is not yet clear whether it will be in Skjern, Denmark.

Tórshavn City Council recently announced that planning has started on building a new indoor multisports complex, which will meet international requirements.

However, last week Mayor Annika Olsen said that this project may take a while because other urgent projects in the capital must take priority.

This is a problem, says Ellefsen, who would like to see a Faroese multisports hall as soon as possible. She says the state has a duty to ensure that the Faroes can host their own international handball games, and that a multisports hall should be financed by the state, the City Council and private investors.
