Mobile homes becoming a nuisance

Mobile homes becoming a nuisance
Foreign caravans are increasingly found parking on private property

Tourists who bring their mobile homes are becoming a nuisance for businesses and their customers.

One of these businesses is Yndi Fitness in Tórshavn, whose parking lot is sometimes filled with mobile homes, leaving gym goers with nowhere to park.

“One morning after international passenger ferry Norröna had arrived, I counted no less than 21 mobile homes in the parking lot,” says Jákup Jacobsen, owner of Yndi Fitness.

Lack of information

He is, however, reluctant to blame the tourists directly, as the information available to them is insufficient. Yndi Fitness, which shares a parking lot with a supermarket and other traders, has now set up ‘no camping’ signs.

This has helped, says Jacobsen, but he would like to see more effort from the tourist authorities to inform foreigners who come to the country.

New brochure for campers

Henny á Líknagøtu, sales and marketing manager of Smyril Line, which runs Norröna, acknowledges the problem and says that a new brochure has been made to address the problem.

“It contains a map of all the approved camping sites in the Faroes, opening times, guidelines and other relevant information,” she says.

This brochure is handed out to all tourists arriving in caravans. As it has only been available this summer, it is too early to assess its impact, according to tourist agencies.
