Replacement ferry costs DKK 250k per day
“Prince”, the temporary replacement ferry on the Suðuroy route, will cost DKK 7 million for the 28 days it will cover the route.
The replacement service will start on 18 September, when regular Suðuroy ferry Smyril takes off for Odense, Denmark, where it will dock for scheduled maintenance work on 20 September.
National transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins is aiming to have Smyril back in regular service on 12 October.
The ”Prince” crew will consist mainly of foreign nationals, although a few Faroese people are also signed on.
A ferry with a long history
”Prince” was built in Finland in 1974 and is registered in Cyprus. In recent years it has covered a route between Italy and Greece.
It has had many names and has been in service for several Scandinavian shipping companies, including Color Line, Stena Line and Scandinavia Ltd.
The new ferry, which has a similar passenger and vehicle capacity to Smyril, will serve the Suðuroy route twice a day. For timetables, visit the Strandfaraskip Landsins website.
