The Thomas Dam home improvement store á Hálsi in Tórshavn has placed heavy restrictions on its sales of nitrous oxide canisters.

Sales of the canisters recently went up significantly over a short period as young people came into the store several times a day to buy the canisters.

This caused suspicion among staff and after a while the manager decided to take the items off the shelves.

Health hazards

Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas that when inhaled can make people feel euphoric and relaxed.

Nicknamed "laughing gas" and “hippie crack”, the gas can cause some people to have hallucinations.

It has long been known that it is dangerous to inhale nitrous oxide.
