Easier to confirm paternity
A new bill seeks to scrap the requirement for fathers to meet in person at the Family Administration office to confirm paternity of a child

The Ministry of Social Affairs has submitted a bill which aims to make it easier for fathers to confirm paternity of a child.

The new law change would get rid of the requirement of a child’s father – if he is not married to the mother – to meet in person at the Family Administration office in Tórshavn to confirm that he is the father of the child.

Instead, the plan is to enable the father to confirm his fatherhood with a digital signature once the digital identity system is implemented later this year.

It is inconvenient for people outside of the capital region to have to travel to Tórshavn for this purpose, according to the bill’s explanatory notes.
