Airport parking system under investigation
The Data Protection Agency is looking into a potential personal data breach in connection with parking at Vágar Airport

22.07.2020 - 06:55

When you park your car at Vágar Aiport, details about your car and your parking times become available to the public.

Users have the option of paying in self-service payment machines at the airport or paying via the airport’s website.

If you choose the latter option, anyone who knows your car’s licence plate number can find details of your parking arrangements at the airport through the website. Photographs of the driver are also taken at the payment machine and published on the website.

Possible personal data breach

Vágar Airport has now stopped publishing photos of drivers after the Data Protection Agency became involved in the matter.

According to Eyðhild Skaalum, the head of the Data Protection Agency, this type of processing of personal information requires authorisation as well as consent from the user.

Regin I. Jacobsen, CEO of Vágar Airport, was not available for comment yesterday, but he has said that the airport management is working with the Data Protection Agency to resolve the issue.
