Explosion heard in Tórshavn

Police received numerous reports last night from startled Tórshavn residents who had heard a loud explosion.

It soon emerged that the noise came from an exploding ship engine.

Trawler Niels Pauli has been docked at Tórshavn’s western quay for about a year. When the engine was fired up for the first time in months, a misfire caused an explosion.

A fire squad and an ambulance rushed to the scene shortly after 8pm last night. No personal injuries were reported, but the ship’s funnel was heavily damaged.
