Swedish telecoms firm Ericsson will provide the technology for Føroya Tele’s upcoming 5G network.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei built the 4G network for the two leading Faroese telecoms firms, Føroya Tele and Nema, and for a long time it looked likely that Huawei would provide the technology for the 5G network, too.

The Chinese company has been accused of espionage on behalf of the Chinese state authorities.

However, according to Føroya Tele CEO Jan Ziskason, the decision to drop Huawei was based purely on commercial considerations.

Nema says it will continue to use 5G technology from Huawei until told otherwise by the government.

Føroya Tele aims to complete its 5G network by 2023. The company has not disclosed the total cost of the project.
