New prison in 2030

The Danish and the Faroese governments have agreed to begin the process of building a central prison to replace the detention centre in Mjørkadalur.
This was one of the first announcements from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen when she arrived this morning on her second official visit to the Faroes.

The process will consist of three stages:
• 2023 and 2024 will be spent on construction planning and identifying the right location.
• A suitable building area will be prepared in 2025 and 2026.
• Construction is due to start in 2027 and is scheduled for completion by year-end 2030.

The resolution signed by the Danish and Faroese Prime Ministers states that the Danish authorities will start allocating funding for the project as soon as the project has been approved by the Danish Parliament.
