Recent weeks have seen an unusually high number of detainees awaiting trial.
This has led to the Mjørkadalur detention centre in Streymoy now being filled beyond capacity.
“We will probably need to send some of the detainees to Danish prisons,” says police chief Michael Boolsen.
Many people who have been ordered to serve short sentences at the Mjørkadalur centre will have to wait for their turn until a prison cell becomes available for them.
