Complications ahead for international adoption
Faroese adoption hopefuls may face difficult times as the Danish international adoption agency threatens to stop its activities on 1 January

The Danish International Adoption agency (DIA), through which most Faroese adoption hopefuls apply for international adoption, will close on 1 January unless extra funding is secured.

With the threat of closure, the DIA hopes that the Danish government will increase its appropriation for international adoption procedures.

“As things stand, the DIA will stop accepting applications for international adoptions, but the processes for national adoptions will go ahead as usual,” says Súsanna Nordendal, the chairwoman of Familjufyrisitingin (the Faroese Family Administration).

A cumbersome process

It will still be possible for Faroese citizens to apply for international adoption if the DIA follows through with its threat of closure, but it will be a long and complicated process without the aid of an adoption agency, says Nordendal.

“It is not a formal requirement according to the adoption law to use an adoption agency for international adoption, but it is a long and drawn-out process including lots of legal paperwork which most people would find very complicated.”
