National transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins has drawn up a set of recommendations regarding two new car ferries and two new smaller passenger boats.

Planning work has begun on the construction of the ships.

So says finance minister Jørgen Niclasen, who presides over Strandfaraskip Landsins, in connection with the proposal by Tjóðveldi (the Republican Party) to renew the entire public ferry fleet.

In related news, Strandfaraskip Landsins revealed earlier this week that it has purchased Norwegian cargo ferry Hasfjord for heavy-cargo transport on the Streymoy-Sandoy route.

Hasfjord was built in 1975 and is 40 metres long and just over nine metres wide. Upgrade work to fill the requirements for heavy-cargo transport in the Faroes will start early next year.

As Hasfjord will primarily be used for cargo transport, it only has a capacity for 12 passengers. It is not yet clear when the ferry will be taken into use.
