Minister aims to improve special needs education

Special needs teaching in Faroese schools has seen significant improvements in recent years.

There are more special classes, an increased number of qualified special needs teachers and a two-teacher system has been introduced in younger classes.

But there is room for further improvements, says culture minister Jenis av Rana, who has set out to review special needs teaching, both as part of regular teacher training and supplementary teacher training.

Special pedagogy is currently an optional subject in teacher training, but the minister says that everyone undergoing teacher training is introduced to elements of special needs teaching.

He is planning to consult with the University of the Faroe Islands on how to make special pedagogy a more integral part of all teacher training.

There are currently ten dedicated special education units in the country, serving some 180 pupils with special education needs.
