Fourteen people, a rescue boat and a ferry took part in a search and rescue operation in Nólsoy last night.

Police received a report shortly before 6 pm yesterday from Tórshavn residents who reported seeing what looked like an SOS light signal south of Nólsoy village.

Locals headed up to the mountain, while the village’s rescue boat searched along the shore. Nólsoy ferry Erla Kongsdóttir also took part in the operation as it is equipped with a heat-sensitive camera which makes it easier to find people in darkness and in the sea.

The search operation was called off at 7:30 pm when it became clear that the light had come from a helmet torch worn by locals who had gone for a mountain hike.

Similar occurrence in Gøta

A few hours later, around 11 pm, police received a similar report, this time in Eysturoy.

Residents in Gøtugjógv reported seeing a light in the mountain north of Norðagøta.

The matter was not pursued further as it soon emerged that the light had come from two local men hiking on the mountain with a torch. Both were safe and sound.
