Women’s rights legend honoured on new stamp
Andrea Árting played a key part in the negotiations for equal pay for both sexes
The text on the new commemorative stamp translates into English as “The same wages for the same work”

To mark the International Women’s Day today, Posta has issued a new stamp featuring arguably the most influential women’s rights activist in Faroese history, Andrea Árting.

For a full 40 years, from 1937 to 1977, she chaired Havnar Arbeiðskvinnufelag (the Women’s Labour Union of Tórshavn).

Shortly before stepping down from this role, she took part in the historically tough labour market negotiations in 1977.

The then 85-year-old women’s rights activist played a central role in persuading employers to agree to the demands of equal pay for both sexes.

This change was phased in over the following few years, writes Posta in a press release.
