Monday’s round of 3,612 Covid tests resulted in 100 positive cases.

The daily numbers of positive tests over the past week have been as follows: 44, 49, 69, 61, 35, 57 and 100.

“The past few days have seen an average of 20-30 arrivals from abroad testing positive for the Omicron variant. The rest is community spread here in the Faroes,” says chief medical officer Lars Fodgaard Møller.

“We’re seeing that the vaccines do not protect well against infection with Omicron, but our figures show that fully vaccinated people are about four times less likely to develop serious illness.”

Møller is concerned about the high infection rates in Denmark, which he says are almost out of control.

“We’re moving away from trying to contain this ultra-transmissible variant as contact tracing is becoming increasingly difficult,” he says.

“Our aim now is to prolong the spread over as long a period as possible to avoid collapsing our health system.”

He adds that it absolutely crucial that everyone continues to stay alert and act responsibly.

“We should all wear masks in indoor public spaces, and I urge everyone to get vaccinated – with a booster shot where applicable. And remember to maintain proper hygiene at all times.”
