Radioactivity measurement unit reactivated

Equipment for measuring radioactivity levels has been set up at Tórshavn’s meteorological station.

The system was first introduced in the Faroes in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

After a few years of radioactivity measurements in the Faroes, the equipment was returned to Denmark about seven years ago, according to Vørn, the Faroese Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

At the start of this year, the measuring unit was sent back to the Faroes, and it has now been reactivated.

Not directly linked to nuclear threat

“The decision to reactivate the unit is not directly linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent nuclear threats issued by President Putin; however, this has speeded up our decision, says Vørn’s Oddmar Kruse.

The radioactivity measurement unit is administered by Vørn in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries.
