Covid-19 is still going strong across the world, and we should not dismiss the idea that a new Omicron variants will come to the Faroes.

This is the view of Pál Weihe, professor of public health, who believes it is not unlikely that we will be seeing a new Covid outbreak in the Faroes this autumn.

“A new Omicron variant is currently circulating in Europe, and it has already made its way to Denmark,” he says.

“Whether this will lead to a full outbreak here in the Faroes is difficult to predict. It all depends on the levels of immunity we have built up.”

In case of a new outbreak, he adds, it may become necessary to administer a fourth and possibly a fifth booster shot, especially for the most vulnerable groups.

If the current vaccine does not protect against new variants, new vaccines may be produced.

“If a new and highly transmissible variant comes to the Faroes, it is not inconceivable that the need to reintroduce restrictive measures may arise.”

Weihe does not, however, believe that we should start rescheduling our summer holiday plans.

“It is too early to start worrying,” he says. “We should be aware that a new outbreak may appear at some point, possibly this autumn, but let’s just wait and see.”
