Youths need to learn more about online safety
It is crucial that children and parents talk about rights and duties in the online space, says counsellor

Children must learn more about their rights and duties with regards to online safety.

So says Súsanna í Króki, a counsellor working in the so-called SSP project, which is an interdisciplinary collaboration between schools, social authorities and the police, tasked with promoting the safety and well-being of children and teenagers.

Her job includes talking to schoolchildren of all ages about challenges they encounter online.

“These challenges include digital harassment, cyber bullying and indecent exposure, which can cause severe stress and anxiety in the young people,” she says.

“It is therefore crucial that children speak to their parents about these challenges.”

SSP has teamed up with the Public Health Board and telecom firms Nema and Føroya Tele for a series of information campaigns in schools across the country.

The first of these campaigns, titled ‘Tryggari Internet Dagur’ (‘Safer Internet Day’) starts in late October.
