The Eysturoy and the Sandoy subsea tunnels made it to the finals of the 2022 ITA Tunnelling Awards.

Organised by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), the awards celebrate the most ambitious underground projects across the world as well as the latest innovations, techniques, and methods in tunnelling.

The two Faroese tunnels made it into the last four in the Project of the Year (between €50m and €500m) category.

However, they were beaten to the post by a rainwater discharge pipe project underneath Tokyo, which aims to reduce damage from flooding in a nearby river while also improving the quality of the water.
